A replica of the football jersey worn by the Zaire National Team in the 1974 World Cup. This shirt is significant because their participation in that tournament left one of the most unusual moments in football history.
The surprise came during the match against Brazil, in the 80th minute, when the referee awarded a free kick to the Brazilian team. What stood out was that, as soon as the whistle blew, defender Mwepu Ilunga sprinted out of the wall and kicked the ball toward the opposite side, sparking criticism and mockery.
Although many believed the players didn’t know the rules, years later the defender admitted he had done it on purpose, as a form of protest, to expose the reality of the Zairean National Team, which had been threatened by the country’s military regime.
